How Do I Clean My Dentures?
December 15, 2022Dentures are a popular, effective tooth replacement if you’re missing several or all your teeth. At our office, we offer partial, full, and implant-supported dentures. How do you take care of your dentures? Here are the most important tips.
Clean Them at Least Once Every Day
To maintain good oral health, you should clean your dentures at least once every day. If you want to keep them really clean, it’s a good idea to clean or rinse them after eating.
Handle Your Dentures Carefully
Before removing your dentures for cleaning, lay a towel in the sink so if you accidentally drop your dentures, they have a soft landing spot. Dentures are durable, but you should still handle them with care.
Don’t Use Toothpaste To Clean Your Dentures
Brush your dentures thoroughly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap to remove plaque and food debris. Toothpaste is too abrasive, so stick with soap or a denture cleaner.
Use Lukewarm or Cool Water
When brushing or rinsing your dentures, be sure to use lukewarm or cool water. Hot and boiling water will warp the denture’s shape.
Soak Your Dentures Overnight
After brushing and rinsing your dentures, soak them overnight in a denture solution. This kills off any remaining bacteria and keeps the dentures moist. Dentures need to be moist or they can become brittle and break easily. The next morning, rinse your dentures well so you don’t ingest any denture solution.
