What Happens During the Root Canal Procedure?

We understand that root canals can seem scary and intimidating. However, they are actually a very common, simple procedure. Root canal therapy can give you the pain relief you’re looking for and preserve your natural tooth—it’s a win, win!

Why You May Need Root Canal Therapy

First, let’s discuss why a root canal may be necessary and what it’s used to treat. Root canal therapy can be used to treat a severely damaged tooth. The tooth may have been harmed by trauma or extreme decay. When damage or infection reaches the pulp of the tooth, a root canal is needed to keep the tooth alive and prevent the need for an extraction.

The Root Canal Procedure

An in-depth consultation occurs before a root canal is scheduled. During this consultation, you will discuss your comfort levels with Dr. Bobo or Dr. Riley and you will determine together if dental sedation is needed. We offer nitrous oxide if necessary for added comfort. Once all of the details of your procedure are fleshed out, your date will be scheduled.

When you come in for your procedure, our team will start by numbing the area around your tooth with a local anesthetic. Next our dentist will make a tiny hole in the crown of the tooth. Through this hole, they will access the diseased pulp and remove it from the tooth’s canals. After the pulp is gone, they will disinfect the inside of the tooth and fill it with gutta-percha to help prevent future infection. After the root canal is complete, they seal the entry hole and usually place a permanent dental crown over the tooth.

Post-Op Aftercare

Once the root canal procedure is finished, Oakboro Family Dentistry will send you home with a detailed set of aftercare instructions to ensure that your tooth heals nicely. The instructions will contain dietary restrictions, pain management guidelines, cleaning instructions, and more to help you have a smooth recovery. If you have any questions during the healing process, don’t be afraid to reach out to us. We are here to be a guide and a resource for you!
